Details, Details, Details

Be Strategic.

1. When shooting details, you need to pick your moments with your gear.
It is easy for us video guys to fall in love with our toys and use a slider, stabilizer, jib, etc. for everything... from the opening day until the end. What we like to do is use them strategically for certain moments. In our case, the slider is our friend when it comes to details. Other than that, it really doesn't come out to play unless the day calls for it. That allows us to add a different look and touch to this particular facet of the day.

2. You can't make every shot a master piece.
Like point one, pick your spots. Based on what you know of the couple and the decor, pick a few elements you want to make pop by spending extra time on them. What this means is a particular center piece, or the cake, or a table may get a bit more love with your use of light, movements and framing. That said, you can't everything because there just isn't time. It is a live-event.

By being strategic, you will add your own flare without burning yourself out.

3. Vary in wide angles with macro shots.
It is easy to fall in love with a macro lens, but don't forget your goal is recreate the day's atmosphere... so you need to be able to set the stage with a wide-shot of the room or the individual on screen. On the flip side, bringing attention a detail shot by getting really tight with a macro lens or good framing will show your audience your attention to the small things they may have missed.
