La Isla Del Encanto
For the first time in my life, I finally made the decision to take a vacation to an island. I couldn’t have picked a better time to do this as I left just in time to escape the brutal polar vortex cold of Chicago.
I decided to go to Puerto Rico (also known as La Isla Del Encanto or Island of Charm) because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it all - the culture, food, weather, and beaches.
I was also curious to understand the island’s comeback after the tragic Hurricane Maria in 2017. We stayed in San Juan for the first 4 days of our trip, and I was surprised to see that so much of it was restored, and can barely see signs of the Hurricane in a physical perspective. The buildings are full of color, streets full of kind and joyful people and music filling the streets throughout.
We also took a trip to a nearby island, Isla Culebra, and laid out all day on Flamenco beach. The beautiful blue water, palm trees, and preserved nature really made it feel like paradise.
Every day we spent in Puerto Rico was incredible. Some additional highlights:
Tried pina coladas from the place they were invented! (La Barrachina, look it up!)
Ate so much mofongo
Spent so many long hours at the beach, and had sun burns to show for it
Had opportunities to take long walks in Viejo San Juan and capture its beauty through my camera
But most importantly, I had the opportunity to try a new experience with great people. It was an amazing vacation alongside my girlfriend and her family living truly unforgettable experiences together.
